The Beautiful Death.

"That one there looks like a dog," said Miles, pointing at a bright, orange cloud in the sky. He turned on his side and looked at Sabine. She was biting her nails again. She had chewed them so far down, she'd made her fingers bleed.

"Sabine." Miles called out to her, but there she laid, still as a rock and staring blankly into the sky. "Sabine, look at me. Sabine!" Sabine jolted. She pulled her fingers out of her mouth.

"Do-do you think it'll hurt?" she asked.

"I don't know. I don't think so. It'll probably be quick. But, we probably shouldn't think about it." Miles pulled his hand up to his face to also chew on his own fingernails, but stopped himself a moment before. Does it really matter at this point? He didn't know how much longer he could hide it.

"Come here, Sabine. Lay on my chest." Miles adjusted himself on the dense, almost endless mound of flowers growing around the two of them. Sabine crawled over to him and laid her head on his chest.

"You know they're quite beautiful. The flowers." Miles thought aloud. "At least if you don't consider...well. You know." Sabine frowned harder.

"Melany said that...it feels like another person. Living beneath your skin. Struggling to escape."

Miles shuffled uncomfortably. "Remember she could never pronounce 'wolf'?" Why did that come to mind?

Sabine giggled, finally. "You're right, she'd always say 'woof', and we always gave her so much shit for it." Before she could help it, however, her giggles turned into deep sobs. "I'm going to miss her so much."

Miles tried his best to not tear up. His eyes watered as he kissed the top of Sabine's head. He wanted to say 'There there. It'll be OK.' But that was a lie. Even now, he could feel it raging inside him.

"OW!" shouted Sabine, jolting in Miles's grasp. Miles lifted his arm.

Protruding from his wrist, was a small flower bud with two bloody thorns jutting out at the base.
